Updates, improvements, and where we’re going.

Man, have there been a lot of updates and news around the Harpoen applications for iOS and Android these past few days :)

Here’s the news upfront.

- Latest Harpoen for iOS build is v2.02, get it here.

- Latest Harpoen for Android build is v1.02, get it here.

We’d like to give a huge shout out to Ibnu and team at GITS in Bandung for an awesome job helping us push out our first beta build of Harpoen for Android about ten days ago. Since then, we’ve put a number of improved builds on Google Play, and the most recent build is v1.02.

Similarly, we’ve just updated the iOS app, and there’s some great new features and functionalities there that you have asked for: save a Harp photo to your camera roll; follow interesting users by adding them to your friends’ list; and star to favorite interesting Harps. The most recent iOS build is v2.02.

There’s a lot of exciting things coming up soon at Harpoen, including a new web product that will link smoothly with the mobile experience.

Our goal is to provide you, our valuable (and growing!) users will value-added location-based experiences crafted to you expressed interests and wishes. We want to bridge the offline and the online, the web and the native mobile experience you carry around each day like a diary. And we want to do this by being a first-mover company to publish physical spaces. We take you on a social journey. We make the walls talk. We make spaces social. Thank you iPhoneMalang and IM3 Malang for a great meet-up yesterday, Sunday 24 March, at the incredible Ria Djenaka Cafe, Jl Bandung #5 in Malang. A great day was enjoyed by all.

Harpoen previewed our web products, and launched PulsaHunt Malang!, in which Rp. 600.000 in Telkomsel pulsa was distributed in many small amounts in several dozens harps spread throughout the city.

While the IM3 marketing team was understandably bummed that it was Telkomsel pulsa, the iPhoneMalang community eagerly embarked on this “digital scavenger hunt” and by Sunday evening all the PulsaHunt harps had been found.

Special thanks to the 5 Harpoen users who volunteered video testimonials — we’ll have that up on our YouTube channel soon.

Tomorrow morning Harpoen is off to Yogyakarta and Malang to attend a few community meet ups.

Excitedly, we’re taking the train from Jakarta’s Gambir Station to Yogya’s Tugu station; and later taking the “gajayana express” from Tugu Station onto Malang. What a trip it will be!

While we’re getting ready, we’ve been exploring a variety of users’ Trails in Yogya and Malang. So many exciting images, ideas and memories to browse through!

We’re definitely going to be dropping a lot of Harps to record our memories, ideas and recommendations for travelers taking the same train route, and attending meet ups.

If you have any recommendations for us, let us know what to search for!

Harpoen recognized as global champion by WSA-Mobile

Last night in Abu Dhabi, a panel of mobile experts selected Indonesia’s Harpoen as the global champion in the category of mobile tourism and culture.

Harpoen joins seven other mobile applications from around the world as the eight global champions of this biannual event supported by the United Nations. The awards are implemented by Austria’s International Centre for New Media with the support of the government of Abu Dhabi. Harpoen is the first mobile application from Indonesia to be awarded champion.

Other champions include Hong Kong’s iButterfly in mobile commerce, Sweden’s RoadRoid in mobile government, Canada’s Project Noah in mobile education, and Brazil’s HandTalk in mobile empowerment.

Members of the jury selected Harpoen based on uniqueness of concept, execution, potential to reach a global audience, and commercial applicability. Jury members included several prominent CEOs and strategists in the global mobile industry, including Great Britain’s Ralph Simon – widely considered a mobile visionary and the “father of the ring tone”; Canada’s Gary Schwartz – a seasoned entrepreneur with over twenty years in mobile; Harri Koponen – the COO of Rovio, makers of the Angry Birds phenomenon; and executives from SAP, Dolby, and the head of global research at Mobile Monday.

“We are incredibly fortunate to receive this level of global recognition by so many accomplished judges,” says Harpoen cofounder Agatha Simanjuntak-Ellis. “This recognition really validates what we have been doing, and where we plan on going.”

Harpoen beat out a mobile publishing platform for travel guides from Italy, a global taxi booking service from Estonia, an experiential application from Uganda, and a maker of mobile tourism guides from Austria with more than 3.5 million downloads to be crowned champion in its category.

Harpoen’s winning presentation showcased actual global use cases, with tens of thousands of users having left over fifty thousand messages and memories all over the world since the soft-launch of Harpoen 1.0 in March 2012.

Harpoen 2.0 was quietly released last week in Jakarta, and since then total downloads as well as activities inside of the application have increased tremendously.

Harpoen 2.0 for Android will be released in March 2013.
